  • I always hear “new year, new me “But how many people actually end up sticking to their new years resolutions?

Here are some tips to keep you on track

Start small – break down your resolutions into smaller more manageable chunks .Instead of i’m going to eat healthy this year try swapping one or two snacks for healthier options and work up from there

Pick one – Just pick one resolution instead of having an unachievable list. Its much easier to stick to one thing at a time.

Find something you enjoy – try out new hobbies to find one that you enjoy but also fits into your schedule. You’re more likely to stick to something you are enjoying and fits into your life.

Set a goal that’s measurable Maybe your goal is to walk a mile a day .You can track your progress on an app Or make a note in a diary of the mile you walked, how it made you feel, the weather, what you saw . You will be able to look back after a few months and see how your health and well-being has improved.

Make your resolution a habit It takes time to form a new habit. If it’s something you can add into your daily/weekly routine your more likely to keep your resolution.

Find someone with similar goals. This will keep you accountable. Think gym buddy or joining a group activity Most of all be kind to yourself .Have a bit of patience change takes time!

    Happy new year

Hope to see you on a walk soon

  • Spending time outside in the sun helps your body absorb vitamin D, which is essential for a healthy immune system. Exposure to fresh air could help to generate the bacteria needed to fight off harmful pathogens. A pathogen is the first link in the chain of an infection, and the only way they can be stopped is to have a host of good bacteria defending your body.

Getting fresh air is sometimes enough to help bolster your immune system and fight off pathogens. Exercising in nature can reduce stress and inflammation, it can lead to relaxation and more restorative sleep which can benefit your immune system.

Exercise can help strengthen your antibodies, which can benefit your immune system.

Don’t be put off by the weather.Walking in the rain or shortly after means the air your breathing is cleaner !!

  • I often get asked what to wear Nordic walking as the months get colder.

My advice is always layering !!
It’s easy to work up a sweat Nordic walking. Starting a walk or stopping for a drink can lead to getting cold, so it’s always good to have extra layers to take on and off.

So let’s start with the base layer..

A base layer is a layer of clothing that is closest to your skin.Acting as ‘second skin’ that can keep you warm or cool.

    Base layers keep you warm,
at the same time they absorb and remove your sweat to keep you comfortable while on the move – this is called ‘wicking’. You want the base layer to breathable
A natural wool material is a great option it’s breathable and naturally antibacterial.
Synthetic material is often a cheaper option but not antibacterial.

    Mid-layer

A mid layer should be breathable ,able to maintain heat and regulate your body temperature.
A fleece or a synthetic top is a great option.
Try to avoid a cotton mid layer as it is likely to retain moisture and lead to you getting cold.

    Outer layer
The Outer layer is your protection from the elements . A good outer layer will protect you against wind and rain, while also allowing the moisture and heat from your body to escape,so you don’t overheat during high-exertion activities such as Nordic walking.

A waterproof jacket is a great light outer layer for the rain and wind.
Try to choose good quality with taped seams and waterproof zips.

Soft Shell jackets are another outer layer option . They usually have a good amount of stretch and flexibility . They work well for windy dry days as they tend to be more breathable than a waterproof jacket .
You can always pop your waterproof over the top if the rain makes an appearance using the soft shell as a mid layer.

    Don’t forgot your gloves!
Gloves are important for Nordic walking . Holding the poles the hands are out there in the elements
Think thermal with thin waterproof over the top . Bring a spare pair of you have them.

    Breathable walking socks !
Think moisture wicking .. nobody wants cold damp feet

I always like to pack a hat..and a good way of keeping heat in the body and eat to take off and stuff in a pocket if you get to warm

    Happy trails x

  • Exercising in the rain can help you burn more calories.

The negative ions in the air can contribute to an improved mood

The smell of rain, called the “petrichor effect”, can soothe your mind and regulate brain chemicals that affect mood. The sound of rain is also considered white noise and can be very soothing.

Raindrops absorb pollutants like sulfates, soot, and organic particles from the air.

Noticing the beauty around you, like the reflections on puddles. Vibrant colors of nature and rain drops on spiderwebs can bring peace and wonderment.

Facing the challenge of bad weather together can help you develop a spirit of perseverance, adaptability, and resilience not to mention the laughs.

So grab your waterproofs and let’s explore .
